12 Jun 2002 Michael, I knew you because your dear mother, Barbara, shared your memory. My daughter, Karrie, was born on the first anniversary of your death and your mother taught me an important lesson: "Always say 'I love you.'" Each year, on February 25th your mom quietly slipped out of our office to attend a mass for you at the same church you were raised in. We, who worked with her, left a yellow rose on her desk on each of these anniversaries. She had once said yellow roses reminded her of you, Michael, and she often spoke of how blessed she had been to know you. We knew no words that would convey how we felt, that we had been equally blessed in knowing her. This ritual ended only after our jobs and families moved us apart. In May 1990 I visited Washington D.C. for the first time and I was overcome with emotion as I came upon the Wall. As I searched the directory for your name, my hands trembled as I clutched a yellow rose. When I located the panel and line where your name was engraved, MICHAEL DAVID SHEAHAN, I rested my head on that polished stone and wept. I made a tracing of your name and put it in my pocket. That evening when I pulled it out I recalled your mother's smile. In November 1999 The Moving Wall came to my town, Palmdale, California. Again I brought a yellow rose to leave by the Wall and again I wept. Not long after that a long-time friend and former co-worker told me your mom had passed away. This July 2002, the Moving Wall is returning to the Antelope Valley, to Lancaster, California. I'll bring two yellow roses this time and leave them at your Wall. I'll shed more tears no doubt, but I'll smile as well at the knowledge that your mom has been reunited with her precious child. A memorial initiated by a friend, Kathleen Flynn its4kat@yahoo.com
