Joe Ed was born in Lamesa, Texas and attended school at Lamesa High School where he participated in football and track. He also participated in summer youth baseball. He later attended Cisco Junior College in Cisco, Texas, and Howard College at Big Spring, Texas. He enlisted in the Army on his 20th birthday. Joe Ed was killed on his 30th day in Vietnam while driving a military vehicle when it was attacked by hostile forces. He was killed when the vehicle was struck by a rocket propelled grenade. He died from multiple fragmentation wounds. An editoral in the Lamesa paper following his death perhaps summed up the feelings about Joe Ed's death in Vietnam, "Only the Good Lord knows why Joe Ed Demerson was called to make the extreme sacrifice in the service of his country ... but because he was, the Vietnam War is closer to Lamesa, Texas, today." May his sacrifice never be forgotten. Joe Ed is remembered by his community and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial located at at the Midland International Airport, Midland, Texas. |
