I did not know Daniel, but several years ago I had the privilege to meet his sister at a reunion of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association.

We talked for about 30 minutes and she described how her family had turned the pain of Daniel's loss into healing. They started the organization Peace Trees Vietnam. Peace Trees Vietnam searches for buried land mines and other unexploded ordnance in Vietnam, digs them up and disarms them.

They have saved countless lives and prevented untold human misery. They perform other humanitarian work in Vietnam and do it very efficiently because the organization is staffed by volunteers with only one paid employee.
