John and I were high school classmates. He was a very quiet and unassuming young man. He wasn't much of an athlete, nor student either, but managed to work his way out of school. To this day, I am trying to figure out why John entered the service. He didn't have a mean bone in his body, and to go to a combat zone like Vietnam was something totally unexpected. I wish you were here, John, I miss you like all the others from Sparta High School who didn't make it back to "the world". I went to D.C. and saw your name on that black granite Wall, and the tears just wouldn't stop. I took an etching of your name, John, and it sits in a book with the names of our other fallen comrades from H.S. - Bob Turnbull, Freddy Love, Buddy Littlehales, and Bob Talmadge. Some day, my brother, we will all meet again across the great divide. Until then, John, save me a place, so I can sit next to all my friends again. I thank you for your sacrifice, John.
